My name is Shirley Crowell. You will see my signature on some of my older prints as
"Sarrach"... I was formally known as "Shirley Sarrach", then "Shirley Sarrach-Crowell",
after a remarriage - so I am beginning anew and signing my most recent works as
"Crowell". Confused? Me too...sometimes!
Anyway, I was born and live in the Midwest, metro-St. Louis, MO area, therefore I attended
Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. I received a BFA degree in two major art areas:
Textiles and Metalsmithing/Jewelry and a minor in Ceramics...I wanted to be a
Renaissance Woman! My MFA is in Textiles which gives me the technical background to
do many things in that field: silk-painting, handmade paper, handmade felt,
random-weave basketry, etc. I love to paint in watercolor, make jewelry, and whatever
else artistically crosses my path!
My art images mostly revolve around architecture, especially windows. When looking at
large mirrored windows of buildings in the downtown St. Louis City, the reflective buildings
distort and sway into wonderful animated shapes and that's where my art begins. I use
bright colors to intensify the dream-like cityscapes and create provoking dialogues with
opposites: good/evil, humorous/ominous, conventional/bizzare. These creations are
usually done in the medium of silk painting, but I don't limit myself to just that one medium.
For now, for fun, I've turned drawings/watercolor paintings of shoes, purses and hats
into...architectural houses...too much fun seems illegal! But I enjoy these works so, that I
have put them out there on the market and have sold quite a few. So, here they are now
on my new site to view a number of them together. My love for animals have squeezed
into this conglomeration of art but they too are animated and "changed" from the "norm",
