The silk painting has had a special place in my art life. I began using this medium really as a whim, after I
completed my MFA at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. I had never used the Gutta Resist method on
silk, only hot wax and did not like the messiness of that. This was really different; you can get a sharp fine line
or a thicker line as you choose the size of the metal tip on the resist bottle that you "draw" with. It's a little
awkward at first to draw with a small bottle of liquid onto stretched silk. But as I got used to it...I loved it!
Designs that I had been doing in watercolor on paper were now able to be done on silk fiber with no ruining of
paper and painting by going over the design.
The photographs that I had been taking of the St. Louis, MO architecture made their appearance now onto
silk. The images are mostly of windows, but when looking at the large mirrored windows the reflected buildings
from behind me, distort and sway into wonderful animated shapes.
About 50 photos are used to compile a montage` of bits and pieces of shapes to create my own "cityscapes",
a rendition of what I "see" from my inner world. I use bright colors to intensify the dream-like cityscapes and
create provoking dialogues with opposites: good/evil, humorous/ominous, conventional/bizzare.
